A brief guide to CRC Showing
Showing Classes
Entering your Ridden or Inhand class
· At the entrance to the ring the rider/handler must handover 1 ticket and give their details to the ring steward (Full name, competition number, horse name & horse height)
· Please ask the ring steward if you are unsure if you’re entering a suitable class with your horse/pony
· On entering the ring proceed on the right rein in walk.
· It is the riders’ responsibility to ensure they follow club rules regarding amount of classes entered on the day.
What to expect in a Ridden Showing Class
· Firstly, all competitors will be asked to walk, trot, canter and change the rein together (the judge or steward will tell you when to do so, keep your eye on them!). Lead rein and first ridden ponies will NOT be asked to canter round together. In lead rein classes ponies will walk round together and then be asked to stop (usually at a corner) and one-by-one be asked to trot round the ring to the back of the line.
· The judge will then pull you into a preliminary line-up. They will either tell you a specific order to line up or just to line up in any order.
· In order, one-by-one, the judge will pull out each combination. They will look at the conformation of the horse/pony whilst stood still (out of the line-up) and possibly ask the rider/handler some questions about your combination.
· The judge will then ask the combination to do a short show (occasionally the judge will tell you a specific show to do instead of your own – Listen carefully!).
· In your show you should show walk, trot and canter on each rein. An extension of canter is usually also shown on one rein. If you do not feel confident doing any of these paces, please let the judge know before you start your individual show (Lead rein ponies only need to show walk and trot. Beginners first ridden ponies can choose to whether to show canter in their individual show. First ridden ponies should show canter in their individual show)
· In riding club and pony club classes you will be asked to incorporate a small jump into your show
· When there are lots of entries the classes may be split
· Once all competitors have done their individual show the judge/steward will send everyone back out on the right rein. They will then begin to pull in the placed competitors (1st to 6th usually)
· Rosettes will be given to all placed competitors
· The highest placed member in each class will be awarded a medal (please see the membership cards/committee/website for more information)
· All non-placed competitors will then need to leave the ring, in walk only (CRC will give a rosette to all competitors in children’s classes)
· The placed competitors will then be allowed to do a lap of honor (on the right rein). If your horse/pony is likely to become overly excitable doing a lap of honor please leave the ring before everyone else starts to move off
· 1st and 2nd placed combinations are welcomed back for the championship of their ring at the end of all the classes in that section (please see the schedule/ask at the caravan for more information)
Entering a Ridden Showing Championship
· Only 1st and 2nd placed competitors can enter the championship. (Please check with the steward/caravan/schedule to check which championship you are eligible for)
· Please enter the ring the same as you did for your class. If unsure speak to the steward
· Be sure to have your 1st and/or 2nd place rosettes on display whilst riding in the championship. (only the ones that qualify for that championship)
· The judge(s) will pull you into a line up and generally not ask you to do another show, occasionally you may be asked to do another show. The judge may simply wish to see the horses out of the line up to have another look at conformation. They will tell you what to do
· Champion & Reserve champion will be pulled from the line up and given a rosette and sash!
· All other competitors should then leave the ring (in walk only) so that Champion and reserve can do a lap of honor before leaving the ring
What to expect in an Inhand Showing Class
· Firstly, all competitors will be asked to walk round together and possibly to change the rein (listen out for instructions that the steward/judge may give). You will then be stopped in a corner and asked to trot round to the back of the line.
· In your show you should show walk and trot on each rein.

Showjumping
Entering a Showjumping class
· At the entrance to the ring the riders must handover 1 ticket and give their competition number to the ring steward.
· Please ask the ring steward if you are unsure if you’re entering a suitable class with your horse/pony.
· The steward will place your number onto the ring’s board, riders will be called to enter the ring in the order that their numbers appear on the board. It is the riders’ responsibility to be available when called to enter the ring. If you are not available your number will be moved to the bottom of the board.
What to expect in a Showjumping class
· At the start of each class the riders will have approximately 5 minutes to walk the course to learn the sequence that they must jump the fences (For both 1st round and Jump off round). Once the course walking time is over the jumping rounds will start. Nobody will be allowed to walk the course after the jumping has started.
· Each rider will enter the ring one at a time, the next rider may not enter until the previous round has finished.
· When entering the ring the rider should report to the judge. The judge will need to take the rider and horses’ details (Rider’s name, horse’s name etc).
· The rider will then have a short amount of time to move around the ring (walk, trot or canter but must not jump in this time.
· The judge will sound the buzzer when they are ready. The rider has 1 minute from the bell sounding to starting their jumping round.
· The CRC showjumping is a two-phase class whereby competitors that go clear in the first round must immediately continue onto the second (jump off round) that is timed. The judge will sound the buzzer after the first round if the combination was not clear (the combination must then leave the ring immediately in walk).
· The fastest clear round will win the class, knock-downs and refusals will give the combination faults.
· The placed competitors will be announced and can re-enter the ring mounted or un-mounted to collect their rosettes.
· Placed competitors may then be asked to do a lap of honor (not-compulsory).

What is Jump Cross?
· A round of knock-down fences over cross country terrain.
· 10 faults are given for knock downs and refusals.
· 3 refusals or a fall will mean elimination.
· After 3 refusals at the same fence the combination must move on to the next fence – no exceptions!
· At no point can a fence be jumped as a pair!
· Occasionally, speedy horses/ponies may catch up or overtake slower horses/ponies in front. It is the riders’ responsibility on the course to communicate with the other rider(s) in these situations. If you see the rider in front had a refusal you can shout and ask for right of way to overtake and jump the fence before they continue on with that fence.
· Once your round is over you must leave the jumping field at walk.

What to expect in a Dressage Class
· All CRC dressage tests are from the British Dressage (BD) test catalogue.

· The judge will sound the horn if at any time you ride the wrong manoeuvre in the test. You should then stop and wait for the judge to tell you what to do and when to restart (at the point where you went wrong).
· Each competitor goes one at a time.
· You must stay within the markers during the entire test. Going outside the markers during your test may cost you marks.
· Scores are added up by the scorers on the day and results posted for each class as soon as possible (Scoring can be a lengthy process so please bare with the team!).
· Dressage marks are given as a percentage (%) the higher percentage the better you have done. The judge will also write comments in the boxes next to each manoeuvre on the scoresheet, the comments are to help you to improve for next time.
